Monday, November 20, I received a packet mailed from Staatsarchiv St. Gallen by Marcel Mueller. Marcel works at the archive and researched the Staeheli family at my request in 2010. He and his coworker, Patric Schnitzer provided many documents about our family when I was there.

Marcel explained that his colleague, Benno, who is in charge of the archive library, had given him a booklet titled "Der Guebsensee" which was published in 1953. Because our Staeheli family is mentioned in the booklet, Benno thought we would like to have this copy.

Marcel sent the booklet "over the ocean and through the Wild West to Kennewick". 

The Staeheli Family is mentioned on page 11.

Ian Jaeger has motivated me to post the revised Staeheli Family of Guebsenmoos Google websites. While I have not completed revisions made necessary by Google's ending support of the original sites the family information is correct. It will be necessary for me to clean up links, photos and other details.

 Google has deleted one of two Staeheli Family of Guebsenmoos websites. I am converting both Staeheli websites to conform to Google's new standards and when complete I will publish the new Staeheli websites.

 Today I received an email from Noah, the great, great grandson of Johanna Staeheli Romang of Athens, Wisconsin. His is the first contact I have gotten from any relative in Wisconsin and provides potential to know more about Johanna's descendants.

Gregory George Staeheli, 76, of Spokane, WA passed away May 20, 2021 at Fieldstone Memory Care. Greg was born in Sacramento, CA on April 28, 1945. Greg graduated from Gonzaga Prep High School in 1963, Seattle University in 1968 and Gonzaga Law School in 1972. He spent four years in college ROTC and enlisted in the Army after graduating from law school. He served from 1972 to 1979; six of those years in the Reserves. He worked as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Gray's Harbor County and Spokane County Prosecutor's Office from 1973 to 1980 before going into private practice until he retired in 2016. He was a member of the Cheney School Board from 1991 to 1996; served as School Board President 1993-94. Greg had a passion for outdoor activities: bicycling, hiking, backpacking, boating, motorcycling, snowmobiling and golfing. He also had a passion for reading, learning and absorbing as much as he could especially historical facts. Greg had a zest for life and believed in living each day as if it was his last. But, what he loved most and enjoyed most was his family. He thrived in teaching his boys life skills and encouraging them to try all the good things life had to offer. He was truly invested in ensuring a good, healthy and fun-filled life for his family and in creating wonderful memories. He was successful in both missions. He lived life to the fullest and he left behind a legacy of wonderful, cherished memories. He will be deeply missed, forever loved and remembered by those he leaves behind: Esther Staeheli, his wife of forty-four years; sons, Gavin and Garrett Staeheli, daughter-In-law Sherrie Staeheli and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by by his parents Richard and Patricia Staeheli and brother Richard A. Staeheli.

 September 1, 2021 the two Staeheli Family of Guebsenmoos web sites will no longer be supported by Google and will be removed from public access. Classic sites must be converted to new Google web sites. Conversion requires considerable reconstruction of the original pages and links which could take years.

If there is information on either site you want to have I recommend you copy it now for your personal use.

Today I was notified by Irene Dempsey that Den Dempsey died on June 12. He had recovered from covid which he had in December but recently contracted pneumonia. Doctors cleared Irene to take him home from the hospital so he spent his last week at home with Irene sitting with him holding his hand. To the end he was alert and pain free.

Irene has characterized Den as a brave and determined fighter against the stroke and a good man and mate.

Daphne Dempsey passed away Friday, July 26. She was being cared for in a private home in Bellevue, Washington. Peg Staeheli had arranged for her care and was with her holding her hand to comfort her at the end.

St. Gallen Staatsarchiv photos

Today I received an email from Peter Akermann, DTB_SGSW, with seven photos taken during the construction of Guebsensee from Guebsenmoos. These photos are from the St. Gallen Staatsarchiv.

Felix Frey Article published

Felix notified me that his article has been published in a book about St. Gallen history.
He sent a copy to me in Adobe Acrobat format which I have tried to publish on the Staeheli facebook page and in this blog.


My technical skills are insufficient to publish an Adobe document on facebook or here.


Although the article is written in Swiss German it is possible to scan for names such as Theresia and Daphne and the name Staeheli which shows up in the text. There is a Staeheli family photo from our web site.


I attempted to translate the article using Google translate but the result is not intelligible.


Felix will send a copy of the book to me which I can scan and publish here so we can view it.

Dear Mr Staly,
With great interest I read your research on the Staly-Stäheli family history. I grew up in a town called Herisau and spent a lot of time at Lake Gübsen (Gübsensee) during childhood and youth. It's both tragic and fascinating to see how the formation of the lake changed local people's lives so drastically in 1898/1899.


 Why did I find your research online? By profession, I am a historian specialized on Eastern Europe (USSR and the Balkans) and work at the University of Bern. Since I'm very interested in the history of energy and wrote my PhD in this field (energy history of a Russian region), I decided to engage in a local history of energy too. Therefore, I explored the HPP near my hometown, which happens to be the Kubelwerk which is so closely related to your family's history!


 The paper I'm writing will be part of a book on the Cantonal (State) history of St. Gallen. This professional collected work focuses on social history. I work with archival sources from the St. Gallen State Archive and published resources of the analyzed time (approx. 1890-1905). The history of the Stäheli family is an ideal example of what I want to show in the paper: Energetic infrastructures are not neutral technological installations, far away from the "human world", but affect(ed) people's lives massively in manifold ways.


I would very much like to incorporate the Stäheli story into my paper. Therefore, I want to ask you if you would like to support the endeavor with your insight and/or photographies, archival records or the like? I would be very grateful for any detail you could add to the processes that led to the departure of the Stähelis from Gübsenmoos and their first years in the States. Of course, your support would be thanked for in the first footnote of the paper, as it is custom in the field.

Sharon Staeheli Thompson provided information about her mother's passing.

STAEHELI, Lillian B.(Hibbs) (Age 99) was born November 4, 1916 in Colville, WA to Roy and Mable Hibbs, and passed away on March 7, 2016. She moved with her family to Lapwai, ID where she graduated. Lillian came back to Addy, WA in 1940 where she married Robert C. Staeheli. They spent their married life in Colville where Bob was co-owner of the Staeheli Creamery. Lillian's joy was her family.She was preceded in death by her husband Bob; parents; sisters Jean Phillips, Helen Leaf and Ruby Wilson; her brothers Con, Mel and Cecil Hibbs. Den Dempsey Continues to Improve

January 16, 2015

Den began work at Provail this week. It is an organization that helps people with disabilities. He has computer classes - his teacher said he was excellent !   And he is experimenting with communication devices that will help him. He is really working hard. Irene bought a recumbent cross trainer for him and he is enjoying a new workout on it every day.

Irene has been trying to find a diet that is fat free, calorie intensive and blendable. Not easy to find !  It turns out that Den has GERD and needs a fat free diet.  The blended food is working much better than the canned formula but now weight is a problem.

Den's court date is Jan. 30th when his petition to end the guardianship will be decided. Keep you fingers crossed for him. He really wants to be his own boss. The physical limitations are hard enough for him to accept - he wants at least to control the material things he has worked so hard for all these years.

Irene is looking forward to spring because she has ordered roses to make a rose garden. She is a great lover of roses. The deck is a project for spring as well.

Sam continues to be the best aide ever ! he is Den's best pal and workout trainer. Such a wonderful companion and friend.

Den and Irene Dempsey Move to Everett

This report about Den Dempsey is dated October 22.

Den and I are settled into our new home. The address is 4111 Federal Ave. Everett 98203. The phone is the same, 425-353-5905.  Please feel free to come and see us any time.

In early December we will have a little open house to welcome you, but we are happy to see you before then if you have time.

Den is doing really well. We have been going every week to Harborview to the eye specialist there and Den will have a cornea transplant on his right eye in a couple of months. His physical therapy continues to bring strength and agility and he talks a lot and more clearly all the time despite the paralysis on the right side of his mouth.

My blended food for the tube feeding is going very well. It seems to agree far better with his system than the canned formula did.

We plan a little trip to a cabin at Wallace Falls this weekend with my daughter and her husband. Den's big news is that we discovered VELOCITY, a TV channel devoted strictly to cars, their restoration, and value, and car auctions. He watches it whenever possible, and loves it, of course.
