Ann Staeheli's Memorial

I was notified by Pat Staeheli and Therese Staeheli about the passing of their mother, Ann, on July 9, 2012.   Below is the obituary published in the Tacoma News Tribune on July 15, 2012.

Ann Bernadette (Kneeshaw) Staeheli Nov. 4, 1921 - July 9, 2012 Ann Bernadette (Kneeshaw) Staeheli passed away peacefully with family members present on Monday July 9th, 2012. Ann lived a long life of devotion to her Catholic faith and dedication to her large extended family. Ann was born in Tacoma on Nov. 4, 1921, the second of four children, to Francis and Josephine Kneeshaw. She was a Tacoma girl through and through and told stories of "many a time and place".

In her youth Ann developed under the kind guidance of the Tacoma Dominicans as she attended St. Patrick's grade school and graduated Aquinas Academy as "Miss Aquinas" in 1940. At the end of high school she was introduced to a young National Guardsman, George Staeheli from Spokane while he was training near Tacoma. They began a friendship. She then enrolled at Seattle University nursing school but her education was cut short in March 1941 by the forever deep loss when her father, was struck down while walking by a speeding delivery truck. Ann then went to work at her father's friend's jewelry store- Grimstead's, helping her mother and younger brothers.

Romance blossomed as World War II began and Ann worked and corresponded with George while he entered and completed Naval Aviator training in Florida. Ann married Ensign George W. Staeheli at St. Patrick's Church in Tacoma on June 26, 1943 and began her life of travels and living in other parts of the country with Tacoma as home base. She stayed in Tacoma as a young Navy wife with child while George, went off to war as a Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown. When George returned from combat in August 1944, Ann and George continued their marriage journey and US Navy life together through post-war deployments and duty relocations from New York to Norfolk VA to Monterey CA.

In 1952 LCDR George W. Staeheli, USN was again called to war in Korea aboard the aircraft Carrier USS Oriskany flying combat missions over North Korea. Ann again put her trust in God, now with 5 children praying for their father's safe return. Next stop after Korea and Monterey, CA was McChord AFB in 1954 returning to her family and friends in Tacoma. LCDR George Staeheli was Naval Liaison to the USAF fighter interceptor squadrons and became a qualified F-86 fighter pilot. Meanwhile Ann continued the role of active mother of eight children in St. Pat's parish.

In January 1958 CDR George Staeheli was reassigned to command a Navy fighter squadron in Moffat Field, CA. Misfortune struck again in Ann's life in June 1958 when her husband was killed due to a flameout in his FJ4B Fury jet at high altitude in icing conditions on a pre-deployment training mission over Oregon.

With trust in God and firm in her faith, Ann continued life's journey as a widow with eight children and another on the way. As her children grew and tested her, Ann used her deep brown eyes and ready wink as quiet behavior modification and remained the pillar of strength, hope, trust and faith in God. She continued to use her Irish eyes and wit through her care and dedication towards her grandchildren. She kept a strong family focus on faith, education and world events always encouraging travel.

Ann extended her love by opening her home and heart to her nieces and nephews, second and third cousins and many neighbors and friends. She nurtured four CCS foster infants sending them out with love and tears to their adoptive families. Throughout her life she was always ready to quietly assist those in need; she was a mother to many. In 1961, the Tacoma News Tribune honored her as "Mother of the Year". She was a member of Catholic Daughters, The Legion of Mary, Tacoma Seaman Center and Pregnancy Aid. She maintained lifelong friendships and organized her yearly class reunions. This legacy of family, friendship, outreach, charity and love will extend forever in those she touched by example.

In addition to her parents, her late husband CDR George W. Staeheli USN and her infant daughter MaryAnn Kathleen (d. 1958), Ann was also predeceased by her sister Rita Degon, and brother David Kneeshaw. Ann spent her last weeks with her brother John Kneeshaw at her side as they went together on a well deserved path to a peaceful eternity.

She is survived by her eight children (and spouses), Therese, Patrick (Estrellita), Joseph (Patricia), Mary Ann, George, John (Marilyn), Peg (John Troup), Christopher (Anita) and her twenty-one grandchildren, Divina, Carmen, Guadalupe, Nicole-Marie, Dominic, Fernando, Celine, Joline, Paul, Robert, Korine, Christine, John, Jimmie, Greg, Joe, Anne, Rita, J.T., Ian and Laura, and fourteen great grandchildren and her always special nieces and nephews.

The Staeheli family extends its appreciation to the emergency room staff at St. Joseph's and the caring staff of Tacoma Lutheran Home for their kindness and smiles during Mom's time in their care. A combined Funeral Mass to celebrate Ann's and her brother John's lives will take place Friday, July 20, 2012, 10:00 am at St. Patrick Church 1001 N. J St. Tacoma, with evening Rosaries Thursday, July 19, 2012, 7:00 pm at St Patrick Church. Memorials to St. Patrick School, St. Patrick Seniors, Pregnancy Aid, Sisters of St. Dominic are welcomed. Recently Burt Dempsey passed away in Seattle.  A memorial celebration was held at the Edmond's Senior Center on Sunday, April 22.  I was not able to attend but have been in contact with Daphne Dempsey who informed me of the event.

I will contact Den Dempsey, Burt's son to request more information about Burt to publish here or on the Staeheli family website.  This photo was taken in March of 2011.

The following information comes from the Barton Family Funeral service website:

Burton L. Dempsey (born November 8, 1918), passed away March 30, 2012. Devoted husband of Joanne (deceased) and father of Dennis and Pamela.
Burt served in WWII and raised his family in the Seattle area after the war. He used his GI Bill to become an airline pilot but younger, returning Korean War pilots were preferred by the airlines. He was a self employed home builder and excavating contractor until his retirement in 1980.
He and Joanne enjoyed boating in the San Juans and traveling throughout the western states and Canada with friends during their retirement years.
There will be a private family memorial for Burton. Remembrances may be made in his name to Washington Animal Rescue.

Marcel provides new map information showing the Staeheli home in Guebsenmoos

Marcel Mueller, a researcher at the St. Gallen Staatsarchiv has sent a map which was found by Ueli Risch, who has been sorting and documenting the historical records of the Kubel Elektrik powerplant.  The map lists Albert Staeheli as owner of properties number 13 and 16 in Guebsenmoos.  The Staeheli home was on property 13 and on the map is clearly located on the property with the boundary, contour lines and access roads also shown.  Marcel has given me permission to publish photos of the map on the Staeheli website.

I am grateful to Marcel for his ongoing interest in my family research and his continuing support of this project by providing new information as it becomes available.  A few images are shown here.

Additional information can be found on my post titled A Productive Summer - continued from 2010.

Staeheli Home Photo - New Information

Peter Akermann, a researcher for St. Galler Stadwerke, contacted me last September about an old map of eastern Switzerland.  I had previously seen the map so I responded that I am looking for information about Guebsenmoos and Guebsensee during the construction of the reservoir.  When walking the path around Guebsensee I saw a historical sign with a photo taken during construction of the reservoir showing structures in Guebsenmoos.  The structures, houses and barns, would eventually be flooded as the reservoir filled.

Today I received an email from Peter with a photo he found on the internet showing the same scene as the photo from Jack Staeheli showing the Staeheli house in Guebsenmoos.

This raises a question about the identity of the house in the photo.  We know the Staeheli house was underwater after the formation of Guebsensee.  The house in the photo is standing with the Guebsensee in the background.  It appears the earth dam at the west end of the reservoir is in place and the reservoir is full.  If that is so then the house in the photo could not have been the Staeheli house in Guebsenmoos.

More research may confirm this.  Still, the house in the photo could be representative of the style of home the Staeheli's occupied in Guebsenmoos.

My thanks to Peter for researching this photo and providing the information.

Contact with Stacy Pettitt

Today I spoke with Stacy Pettitt who lives in Pullman with her husband, Steven and their children Riley and Reece.  Stacy is the only child of Claudia (Staeheli) and Lawrence Rayburn.  Her parents are from Colville and moved to Spokane where Stacy was raised.  Stacey graduated from Mead High School in 1992, Gonzaga in 1996 and EWU in 2002.  She claims to be a WSU Cougar fan now.

Stacy's mother, Claudia is the only child of Lester "Babe" Staeheli and Gladys Holst.  Lester was a son of Robert "Bob" and Rose Staeheli.  Lester and his brother Robert Carl Staeheli had the Staeheli Creamery in Colville.  Gladys is 87 and still lives in Colville.

Stacey remembers seeing her great grandmother, Rose, and has fond memories of the time she was with her.

Stacey values our family history and has agreed to provide information she has and that she may collect when sorting through family documents and photos.  I am grateful for Stacy's interest and willingness to add to our story about the descendants of Bob and Rose Staeheli.

Photo of the Staeheli Home in Guebsenmoos

Last spring was a busy time when I received not only the family information from Paul Staeheli but additional material from Sherrie Hansen (Staeheli), Verne Alexander (Erma was his aunt - his father's sister- and Paul Staeheli was his uncle), Ken Alexander, Dennis Dempsey and Jack Staeheli.

Much of the information is new while some corrects errors I have published about certain family members.  My goal is to make corrections, add new material and update my website.

Jack had told me of a photo he saw when he was in Switzerland and Austria some time ago.  The photo was published in an encyclopedia and showed the Staeheli home in Guebsenmoos.  This information was provided by Albert Schwering, an Austrian relative of Maria Rimmel, wife of Caspar Albert Staeheli.  Jack had been unable to find his copy of the photo but contacted relatives to locate other copies.

Last April Jack informed me his cousin's daughter who lives in Canada possessed a copy and would send it to him.  He emailed the house photo on May 2nd.  There are notes in the margins and while it is low resolution black and white the house is clearly visible.  Jack proposes we have a painting made including the Staeheli family in the scene.  We will get together to work out the concept.

I have maps of the Staeheli property in Guebsenmoos and records of the previous property owners with details of the modifications to the house and barn.  The photo enables us to visualize the home and surrounding property. This photo was probably taken after the family had left Switzerland.  The dam had been constructed and water is visible in the background as the reservoir was being filled.
